NOCA's Industry Impact Study

Working with The Plain Dealer, in 2009 NOCA released its initial study of the marketing communications industry in Northeast Ohio.  That study primarily used economic census data and was supplemented with information from Claritas and the State of Ohio. The study looked at NAICS codes – concentrating on the two-digit segments: 51Information Industries and 54 Professional Services; and then focused on the six-digit segments that pertained most closely to marketing communications. In addition, the study looked at “other supportive” services such as printing, telemarketing, etc. The study covered eight Northeast Ohio counties: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit.

The initial 2009 study and subsequent 2012 update yielded eye-opening results on the number of businesses engaged in marketing communications; the number of employees working in the field; and the dollar-impact on the region. Also of note is where the industry ranks in comparison to other segments of the local economy.

Marketing communications in Northeast Ohio ranks larger than the following industries:

  • Transportation and warehousing

  • Hospitality

  • Real estate

  • Arts & entertainment

In 2012 NOCA partnered with Neoconomist/Inside Business to provide the most current data on the marketing communications industry in Northeast Ohio.
